At Nema Misirah Nursery/Lower Basic School, we are dedicated to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where children can thrive. Learn more about our mission, values, and the passionate team that makes it all possible.
Nema Misirah Nursery/Lower Basic School was founded in 2016 by Omar Bah with the aim of providing help and education to children from poor backgrounds. In the early days, he struggled to build a 3 classroom block with just 12 children. Attendance at the school has now risen to over 100 children.
As of now, we have 1 classroom block divided into 3 classes to meet the needs of nursery to primary 2, most of whom come in the afternoon due to lack of space. However, most of the parents are poor and cannot afford to pay school fees for their children. They would even prefer withdrawing their children from school to stay at home without learning. But rather, the school allows the children to stay without paying school fees. The children are always encouraged to come to school as they are given free lunch.
However, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has advised us to build more classroom blocks. But the school is living on a tight budget and is unable to build. The school has a garden of 70 meters by 55 meters where the children are taught gardening. There is also enough space for playing football and basketball for the children.
About 100 children have so far graduated from nursery since inception, and most of them have to seek admission into other schools that can afford primary education, which is an additional burden on parents and constraints to children in the community as they have to go to distant places to meet their needs.
At the moment, the operational license has been approved by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to continue with primary education to ease the burden for parents and especially children, to continue at Nema Misirah Lower Basic School. The nursery is divided into 3 levels – Level 1, the reception class aged; Level 2, aged 4/5; Level 3, aged 5/6.
The school has a head Teacher, 5 teachers, and domestic staff. Our teachers are all trained and qualified from the Gambia College. The school is really struggling to pay its staff. However, in Nema school, we believe a good teacher is always ready to learn new methods and ideas, and we believe learning should be fun. The aim is to improve and maintain the school for future generations and enable the local children to enjoy a better standard of education and well-being.
